The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has published the long awaited results of the fifth annual OIE Photo competition following its closure on 15 April 2019. The OIE announced seven winners on its dedicated website: www.oiephotocompetition.com. The competition, launched in February and titled “Animal health and welfare beyond the cliché”, was a golden opportunity for entrants to artistically and creatively shed light on the importance of the work done worldwide by animal health players in the implementation of OIE International Standards.

This fifth edition of the competition was open to the OIE Global Network and veterinary students from all over the world. The competition was a resounding success and tripled the number of participants and photos submitted from the previous year. With more than 530 participants and 1800 photos to choose seven winning photos from, the jury certainly had a daunting task ahead of them .

In an effort to re-package the competition and continue to offer a more vibrant and modern competition, this year the OIE constituted a team of three veterinarians who happen to be professional photographers as members of the competition’s jury. They shared their brilliant technical photographic expertise with the potential participants in order to help them to creatively and artistically better portray animal health and welfare beyond the cliché.

Other novelties presented this year were new prizes. Two global prizes, worth 1500 Euros each were introduced for the two categories: OIE Global Network and Veterinary students.  Each regional winner from the combined categories would walk away with 800 Euros each.  The OIE continued to use the dedicated website created in 2017 to receive entries. This was revamped with a new dynamic and more modern homepage.

The jury, composed of Dr Radford Davis, an Associate Professor, veterinarian and photographer, Dr Frédéric Décante, veterinary practitioner and press photographer and Dr Tertius Gous, veterinarian and photographer, evaluated the photographs under strict anonymous conditions. The jury selected the photos which best demonstrated, in an aesthetically appealing and artistically captivating manner, the work carried out by animal health and welfare players in the implementation of OIE International Standards.

The prizes will be awarded at the Opening Ceremony of the upcoming 87th General Session of the World Assembly of OIE Delegates in Paris, on Sunday 26 May 2019.
