Father Harry J. Bury tells about his life in his well-structured book

Father Harry J. Bury’s book titled “Maverick Priest: A Story of Life on the Edge” received a good review from Foreword Clarion. It narrates his life story – from advancing in Minnesota to retiring from work in an effort to end violence. The Catholic priest’s book also gives readers an awareness on social injustice during the last half of the twentieth century and the means to end it.
 
Yet, “Maverick Priest” offers an unparalleled writing style. It is written like a history book, a spiritual writing and an autobiography rolled into one piece. The book started with Bury as a young Minnesota boy who then ventured his vocation into priestly life and protested against the Vietnam War. His protests led him to arrests and his religious activism proved him to become an effective warrior for peace, justice and love using nonviolent ways. Additionally, the book includes reflections from Father Bury’s experiences in life. These reflections confirm his mighty faith in God.
 
The book also has a systematic way of arranging events and themes. In the opening chapter, Father Bury points out the qualities of a good priest, which he found hard to attain. Father Bury’s priestly calling is also thought about across chapters and his conclusion mentions that a good priest should be both “authentic” and a “man of conscience.”
 
The best part of the book is Father Bury’s ability to connect his experiences to his spiritual life. An example of this is his admission that he “failed” to become the priest he intended to be and his disposition to be humble. This part makes this book very meaningful and unpretentious.

About the Author
 
Father Harry J. Bury obtained his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior at Case Western Reserve University in 1975 and taught at Baldwin Wallace University from 1979 to 2010. He also held various consultant posts for corporations and government agencies in the U.S. and around the world. He once chained himself along with others to the gate of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon to protest the Vietnam War in 1971. In 2005, he was abducted in Gaza while being held as a human shield between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian citizens. He received an honorary award on February 1, 2012, by the government of Vietnam for his anti-war activities during the Vietnam War.
