The author’s experience with the syndrome began when he was 12, when he experienced symptoms, which doctors attributed to allergies and asthma.

The book will help open up the conversation about Tourette’s.

It took Tyler Oberheu three and a half months to write “Twist and Shout: An Awkward Life with Tourette’s” (Green Ivy; 2015), which is a collection of essays that vividly – and candidly – describe his experiences with Tourette’s through his treatments, diagnoses (and misdiagnoses), medications, and philosophy.

“I spent the summer of 2014 writing about dealing with Tourette’s syndrome,” said Oberheu in a contributed piece to The Icon. “It took me three and a half months to write, not just because finding the words were hard, but also because I interviewed three individuals who also had Tourette’s.

Oberheu interviewed peers (including one referred to him by his younger sister) with the same diagnosis to gain knowledge and also to educate people with the many variances in Tourette’s.

“I have this information and I want to promote awareness,” he told Chicago Tribune. “I was bashful about my tics, but I’d like to create awareness, help out as many people as possible.

“I believe that if everyone can understand what a person’s individual experience is, we would all be in a better place. Everyone has a different experience and a different path in this weird, twisted reality that we live in.”
