ROM Spring 2019 Lectures and Programs

ROM Speaks: Greeting the Spring: Chinese Colour Prints from Suzhou

Hear from Clarissa von Spee of the Cleveland Museum of Art about 17th century prints from Suzhou, China, that express auspicious wishes, the aspiration for wealth and success for the recipients. ROM Speaks: It’s Real, It’s Here, It’s Us: The Science of Climate Change   
Tuesday, May 21, 7:00 pm
Join Kate Marvel, Associate Research Scientist at the NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, to explore the external factors that can change our climate. From natural events such as volcanic eruptions and solar variability to human activities that emit greenhouse gas pollution and ozone-depleting aerosol, hear how they change our climate, raise sea levels, increase extreme weather events, and contribute to a hotter world.

ROM Speaks: Dutch Paintings Keynote Lecture

Hear about the ROM’s new exhibition In the Age of Rembrandt: Dutch Paintings from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston through the eyes of Museum Directors Josh Basseches (ROM) and Matthew Teitelbaum (MFA Boston), alongside donors Eiyk & Rose‐Marie van Otterloo and Susan Weatherbie, as they discuss the impetus to collect and donate major works to museums.

ROM Speaks: Chef in Conversation -- Vikas Khanna in conversation with Madhur Jaffrey
Wednesday, June 5, 7:00 pm
Jaffrey and Khanna dish on the influence of traditional Indian flavours and their personal takes on gastronomy. Vikas Khanna is a judge on Master Chef India, and the recipient of six Michelin stars as Executive Chef at Junuun Restaurant in New York City. Madhur Jaffrey, CBE, is the internationally known and award-winning cookbook author, cooking show host, restaurateur and actress.

ROM Speaks: The Dutch Lion Roars: Painting, Prosperity and Politics in the 17th Century Dutch Republic

Explore the world of Dutch paintings with Jacquelyn N. Coutré, Bader Curator and Researcher of European Art at Queen’s University. With recent research suggesting that between five and ten million paintings were created in the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth century, from Rembrandt van Rijn’s Portrait of Aeltje Uylenburgh to Maria Schalcken’s Artist at Work in her Studio, excellence and innovation abounded. Delve into the enduring relevance of the art of the Dutch Golden Age.

ROM Connects: A Prince and his Pearls: Masculinity, Kingship, and Jewels in Royal India

In the Indian context, the ideal body is always the body adorned, with the royal male body heavily ornamented in jewels to express prosperity, authority, divinity and noble virility. Hear Siddhartha Shah, Curator of Indian and South Asian Art at the Peabody Essex Museum, discuss the function of jewels in styling monarchical power in India, as well as the role of jewelry in shaping a colonial fantasy of Indian men as inherently weak and spectacularly effeminate.

ROM Connects: Faces for Eternity: Romano-Egyptian Mummy Portraits at the ROM
Saturday, May 18, 2:00 pm
On International Museum Day, hear about the ROM’s newest acquisition with an intriguing history—a spectacular Romano-Egyptian mummy portrait of a woman. Curator Paul Denis will place the ROM’s mummy portraits in their historical context, then trace the portraits’ long journey from the Fayum region of Egypt to Toronto, from discovery and purchase to being separated and finally reunited in time for International Museum Day. Originally brought to the ROM in 1912 as a pair, this display marks the first time in over a century that the two paintings will be together again.

ROM Connects: Doors Open Toronto Opening Night – UNCEDED: Voices of the Land
Friday, May 24, 6:00 to 7:00 pm
UNCEDED: Voices of the Land was an unprecedented exhibition at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. Hear from project lead architect Douglas Cardinal and panel members David Fortin, Eladia Smoke, Ouri Scott, and moderated by Gerald McMaster, as they discuss the works and voice of prominent Indigenous architects and designers from across Turtle Island who share an Indigenous vision for the future.

Rock, Gem, Mineral, Fossil, and Meteorite Identification Clinic
Wednesday, June 12, and August 21, 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm
Visitors with rocks, minerals, gems, fossils, or suspected meteorites can have them identified at these special ID clinics, held six times a year. Appraisals of value will not be done. These clinics are free, no appointment is required, and people are seen on a first-come-first-serve basis.
