In reaction to President Trumpís Announcement of Plans to Un-sign the Global Arms Trade Treaty at the National Rifle Association, Oxfam America President, Abby Maxman, said:

WEBWIRE

ďPresident Trumpís decision to un-sign the Arms Trade Treaty is a reckless, self-inflicted wound that continues to demonstrate the Administrationís desire to turn its back on global norms, standards, and US leadership. It is one more misguided step to dismantle the international partnerships that keep us all safe. Just last week, the Administration held hostage a UN resolution to address sexual violence in conflict until language about the need for sexual and reproductive health services was removed. And, itís no coincidence that this comes on the heels of President Trumpís veto of the Yemen War Powers Resolution and continued military support for Saudi Arabia in the war in Yemen.

ĒPresident Trump is sending a clear message to civilians caught in the crossfire: we donít care. The United States will now lock arms with Iran, North Korea, and Syria as non-signatories to this historic treaty whose sole purpose is to protect innocent people from deadly weapons.

ďThe Arms Trade Treaty was developed and signed by the US and others to keep deadly weapons out of the hands of those who may use them to commit genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The treaty has the power to save millions from death, rape, assault, and displacement. Each year an estimated 500,000 people are killed as a result of the unregulated and under-regulated arms trade.

ĒThe Treaty does not infringe on Americansí right to bear arms or hamper the countryís ability to defend itself or its allies, despite what groups like the NRA, and today the Trump Administration may claim. Todayís announcement is an empty play to pander to those who resisted this Treaty from the beginning.

ďOxfam worked towards the Arms Trade Treaty with other members of the Control Arms Campaign for a decade in order to protect people in conflict. Instead of seeking to prevent atrocities and promote peace and security, President Trump seeks to appease the arms dealers who fund the National Rifle Association. Oxfam calls on the one hundred plus countries who signed the ATT around the world to condemn todayís announcement.Ē
