Ottawa, Ontario and Burlington, Massachusetts, November 21, 2006— Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence and performance management solutions, and the University of Ottawa School of Management announced today a partnership to advance research and education in the area of performance management.

Under the partnership, the School of Management will create a new curriculum in performance management which will run through all of its graduate programs, based upon simulations and hands-on application of leading-edge Cognos performance management solutions. Cognos has pledged over C$1 million in financial and gift-in-kind support over three years toward the creation of a performance management-focused faculty position at the School of Management. The company is also making investments in software and services to support research and teaching in the classroom.

“Performance management has become a critical management discipline for improving strategy execution and enhancing organizational agility,” said Rob Ashe, Cognos president and chief executive officer. “Cognos is committed to furthering research in performance management for the benefit of organizations around the globe. We look forward to working with the University of Ottawa to develop strong leaders and innovative research in this important field.”
As a result of this partnership, the University of Ottawa School of Management has created a new faculty position – the Cognos Professor in Performance Management – to help implement the performance management concept as a core and integrative theme in its professional graduate programs. Dr. Greg Richards, the newly appointed Cognos Professor in Performance Management, will initiate a research program focused on performance management and its impact on organizations in the commercial, public and health care sectors. The research will focus on the positive impacts of performance management technology on:

* process innovation;
* management of new product development;
* management of work teams;
* management processes that change based on adoption of new performance management technology.

“As performance management becomes a pervasive element to global business today, the addition of this discipline within the School of Management provides our students with the knowledge they need to succeed in business,” said Micheál J. Kelly, Dean of the University of Ottawa School of Management. “The extensive performance management expertise that Cognos brings to this partnership will make an immediate impact on the School of Management. Through this partnership, I look forward to working with Cognos to create a performance management discipline that is as innovative as it is compelling to our students.”
