All that is needed for mold to become an indoor issue is the presence of moisture or high humidity levels.

Earlier this year, The Gleaner published an article about a study conducted by a lecturer from the Northern Caribbean University. Dian Camoy Griffiths’ study, Environmental Investigation of Sick Buildings, Remedial Action and Health Impacts on Residents in Manchester, Jamaica, examined living and working conditions in at least 70 homes and businesses over a six month period.

According to her findings, some residents did indeed suffer illnesses due to working or living in sick buildings with mold contamination issues. Building occupant complaints ranged from headache, congestion and respiratory illnesses to rashes. The study’s findings regarding health complaints associated with moldy indoor environments are supported by past statements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on this issue. The agency reports: Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all. Some people are sensitive to mold. For these people, mold can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. People with mold allergies may have more severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may get serious infections in their lungs when they are exposed to certain types of mold.

“The tropical and subtropical climates of the Caribbean possess ideal conditions for mold to grow in the natural environment,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “All that is needed for mold to become an indoor issue is the presence of moisture or high humidity levels. The typical residential, commercial or institutional property is filled with building materials, furnishings and personal belongings that make for an excellent food source for mold to flourish once moisture enters the equation. With the introduction of moisture, an indoor environment can quickly become a breeding ground for mold in as little as 48 hours.”

Working to identify and resolve mold and moisture issues across the Caribbean are the professionals at Zimmetry Environmental. Based in Puerto Rico, their staff of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) experts specialize in these types of cases. They investigate sick building syndrome (SBS) cases involving mold and bacteria, inadequate ventilation, chemical contaminants, radon, and a wide range of other issues until a solution can be found. Zimmetry has even sponsored an educational video about SBS that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/AOMC2ois8VU
