CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union Hosts Free Community Paper Shredding Service to Help Prevent ID Theft

The credit union is helping community members protect themselves from identity theft this spring.

Alexandria, VA – WEBWIRE

CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union will be helping community members protect themselves from identity theft by hosting a free community shredding event.

The first “shred event” is Saturday, April 13, 2019 in Harrisonburg, Virginia at the CommonWealth One branch at 42 Terri Drive. From 9 a.m. to noon, Harrisonburg area residents are welcome to bring up to five boxes of paper to be securely shredded and recycled.

The second event is Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the CommonWealth One Main Branch in Alexandria, 4875 Eisenhower Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon.
Shredding paper documents can help prevent personal and financial information from falling into the wrong hands and is an important step in preventing identity theft and fraud.

The 2017 Identity Fraud Study by Javelin Strategy & Research found that $16 billion was stolen from 15.4 million U.S. consumers in 2016 through identity theft.

CommonWealth One’s free community shredding events provide residents the opportunity to securely shred their personal and confidential documents. This can include old tax records, bills, paycheck stubs and more.

The event is free and open to the public.

Local residents and credit union members may bring up to five (5) boxes of documents to CommonWealth One’s Community Shred Day events.

Important Information

  • Attendees are allowed up to five boxes only (15” x 12” x 10”).
  • Please remove plastic covers, trash and other non-paper elements before you arrive.
  • No electronic items, binder clips, three ring binders, checkbooks, or magazines!
  • If you would like to watch your items be shredded, please park your car and walk up to the designated Walk Up bins.

CommonWealth One staff will be at both locations to personally assist members and the public with disposing of their materials. Branch managers and staff will also be available to answer questions about mortgages, auto loans, checking and savings accounts, online account opening and other financial products and services.
