A Fast-Paced Adventure Tale of Love and Honor in the 9th -Century World of the Incomparable Charlemagne
He Fought for His Lands, His Marriage, and His King. the Fight for His Soul Is Just Beginning
George Steger’s passion for the Middle Ages is impressively demonstrated in “Sebastian’s Way: The Paladin,” Book II of the Sebastian Chronicles,.say readers and critics on his website: www.sebastiansway.com. Ringing with authenticity, the book offers a rich medieval stew, full of the authentic stock of the times: savage warriors, ground-breaking clergy, saucy peasants and plenty of lovely maidens for those who like a good romance. “No better way to time travel back in to Charlemagne’s world.”
“The Paladin,” Book II of the Sebastian Chronicles, takes the hero far afield from the Court of Charlemagne and its Rhineland background. Through his courage on the battlefield, original ideas, and steadfast service to the king, Sebastian has been given the honor of becoming one of Charlemagne’s twelve paladins, men who hold the king’s absolute trust and are thus asked to undertake the hardest and most perilous missions for the realm.
Becoming a paladin and pursuing the complex and often compromising schemes of one of the most powerful rulers of the day changes Sebastian from the young man of faith and character he once was to a hard-bitten warrior in a violent world whose losses, mistakes, and trials eventually lead him to fear for the loss of his soul. Thus, the latter part of the book becomes a parable of the ruin and redemption of a professional soldier.
This novel has received the indieBRAG Gold Medallion Award, as well as excellent reviews from KIRKUS and Clarion. “The story is told in painstaking detail through the eyes of one of Charlemagne’s most relied upon warriors/advisors/paladins—Sebastian. The novel engrossed me at every turn with a staggering cast of real and imagined characters. From the changing landscapes to the political manoeuvering, every exotic detail rings with authenticity. With each new trek Charlemagne sends him on, Sebastian is ever loyal, sacrificing his own health, family, and peace of mind to complete his mission. Thoroughly entertaining, I had a hard time putting it down.”—Historical Novel Society Indie Review, May 2018.
