NIOSH Releases New Dampness and Mold Assessment Tool for General Buildings

The new NIOSH Dampness and Mold Assessment Tool publication gives front line property folks a simple cursory investigative framework to identify and rank obvious wet, damaged, odorous or visibly mold affected conditions within their buildings.

Three months ago today, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) announced it had developed and released a Dampness and Mold Assessment Tool for General Buildings. The document, with instructions and worksheets, is available online, along with other information from NIOSH on this important topic.
 
David Weissman, M.D., director of NIOSH’s Respiratory Health Division, stated the following in agency’s release announcement, “Implementing regular visual inspections for dampness can help to identify trouble areas before they become major problems and help to prioritize maintenance and repair. The Dampness and Mold Assessment Tools provide an inexpensive mechanism to investigate, record and compare conditions over time.”
 
Shared in the document’s introduction, NIOSH reports that the health of those who live, attend school or work in damp buildings has been a growing concern through the years due to a broad range of reported building-related symptoms and illnesses. The agency also reveals that research has found that people who spend time in damp buildings are more likely to report health problems such as respiratory symptoms; development or worsening of asthma; hypersensitivity pneumonitis; respiratory infections; allergic rhinitis; bronchitis and eczema.
