Interserve Completes £12m Rotherham Interchange Refurbishment

Interserve, the international support services, construction and equipment group, has completed the Rotherham Interchange following a £12 million refurbishment.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) commissioned Interserve to refurbish the transport hub in April 2018 including upgrades to the car park, new cladding, surfacing, the provision of larger spaces for modern cars, electric vehicle charging points and improved pedestrian routes.

The ten-month refurbishment project involved 150,000 hours of construction work, using 10,000 litres of paint, and installing 11,000 floor tiles, 10km of electric cables, 3,800m2 of insulation, 350 sheets of glass and solar panels to provide the building’s sustainable energy needs.

Interserve was awarded a Considerate Constructors Certificate of Excellence for contributing to the training of 60 students from Rotherham Construction College, helping to develop young people’s interest in the construction sector and their skills in areas including joinery, plumbing, plastering through to project management.

SYPTE Executive Director, Stephen Edwards, said the investment aims to encourage bus use by providing a welcoming and accessible environment that supports the connection of people to places in the borough and beyond.

He said: “The improved Rotherham Interchange will provide a better, brighter place for public transport users as well as those visiting, living and working in the town. Seventeen million people travelling through the Interchange each year, using 1,299 buses a day, will now benefit from new seating, lighting, information displays, electrics and flooring, CCTV and free public wi-fi.”
