Sinopec drills Asia’s deepest onshore well

Sinopec completed an 8,588-meter-deep well at the Shunbei oil and gas field in China’s northwestern Tarim Basin in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region on February 19, setting a new record for the deepest onshore well in Asia. It broke the previous record of a depth of 8,520 meters at the 5-5H well at the same oilfield made on February 14.

The Shunbei oil and gas field was the deepest onshore oil and gas field in Asia. Its crude oil and the gas detected are buried underground as deep as over 8,000 meters. Nearly 30 ultra-deep wells have been built on the field since it was discovered in 2016.
