Tien C. Lee publishes “Wandering in Rock Country,” a fascinating book about his rock collection

A retired geologist/geophysicist enthralls readers, particularly rock hounds, with his collection of rocks.

A geologist uncovers the beauty of rocks by telling a story one specimen at a time.

Considering what to do with a collection of rocks? Either open a rock museum or publish a book. Tien C. Lee did the latter with “Wandering in Rock Country: One Rock, One Story” (LifeRich; 2018).
Lee long thought what to do with his collection but never got around to it. Now retired, he published a book, which title “captures the essence of an opportunistic rock collection.”
“Wandering in Rock Country: One Rock, One Story” is aptly titled, as it creatively tells the science of – and Lee’s romance with – rock collecting. Moreover, the book delivers an engaging narrative by using mission (pertaining to rock collecting) and storytelling.
“On the job, along hiking trails, and in rural housing subdivisions in southern California, I picked up a variety of rocks, some of which carry fascinating geological stories,” said the author, who also imparts his philosophical or personal reflection about a stone’s story.
All images in the book are taken from the author’s collection, made mostly of specimen picked from free-standing, loose pieces of rocks. The author also adds stories on stones he purchased or received as gift.
“I try to write one story for each rock specimen,” said the author. “I stretch my imagination and try to make up a short story for each stone.”
Lee does his best to explain to readers the science behind the formation of rocks by using less scientific jargon to highlight the beauty of the rock specimens and to spark the readers’ imagination of rocks.
“After all, observation of a rock’s beauty is all we can do in the field. Beyond beauty, however, does a particular rock have an interesting story to tell?
