Ryder launches 2019 apprentice technician programme

Birmingham, UK – WEBWIRE

Ryder, a leading independent provider of commercial vehicle rental, contract hire, and maintenance services in the UK, is now accepting applications for its 2019 apprentice technician programme.

The long-running scheme provides successful applicants with a full-time job that offers a very competitive salary and a generous reward programme for continuing their careers with the company over the long term. Apprentices are based at one of Ryder’s locations to gain workplace experience and attend Stephenson College in Leicestershire on a bloc-release basis to gain their formal qualification.

The locations seeking apprentices are:

• Avonmouth
• Birmingham
• Bradford
• Dukinfield
• Edinburgh
• Fenstanton
• Manchester
• Milton Keynes
• Northampton
• Rainham

Apprentices undertake the IMI Certificate in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and develop into a fully qualified HGV Motor Vehicle Technician. They will assist Ryder’s existing technicians in the preventative maintenance and repair of Ryder’s 20,000-strong commercial vehicle fleet, working on multi-marque vehicles and using the latest diagnostic technologies.

Applicants must hold four GCSEs at grade C and above, including English, Maths, and Science.

Ryder’s apprenticeship programme was shortlisted for Apprenticeship of the Year at the 2018 Motor Transport Awards. Ryder apprentices have been finalists in the prestigious Semta Skills Awards, the Asian Apprenticeship Awards and the EuroSkills Finals. Ryder launched its National Apprentice Programme in 1994 and since then has employed 245 apprentices.

Key to the success of Ryder’s apprenticeship programme is the pastoral care and support given to apprentices. They are also assigned a mentor who provides one-to-one support for three years to coach and assist their practical skills development.

Catherine Steel, HR Director at Ryder, said: “At Ryder, we believe in investing in our people and the future of the commercial transport industry. Our Apprenticeship programme has been helping people into successful careers in the automotive industry for 25 years. Some of our apprentices have gone on to hold senior management positions within Ryder, and their experience is invaluable in shaping our programme and mentoring the next generation of young engineers.
