Sasol Hosts the 39th Secunda Marathon this Saturday

Secunda, Mpumalanga – WEBWIRE

Sasol is hosting the 39th Secunda Marathon on Saturday, 16 February. The race, being a Comrades and Two Oceans qualifier, has already attracted close to 850 pre-entries. The starting time is 06:00 at the Sasol Recreation Club on Nelson Mandela Drive in Secunda.

This race is one of the initiatives for Sasol to promote healthy living to all types of people, of all ages and fitness levels. The race comprises three major races i.e. a 42.2 km full marathon, or a 21.1 km half marathon and a 10km. Families and novices are encouraged to participate for enjoyment in the 4.5 km fun run. The event is such an attraction, that it brings the Secunda town roads to a halt with enthusiastic participants and spectators. Apart from the excitement of the race, the Secunda Marathon will again have efficient water points at every 2.5-3 km along the route. These are manned by Sasol employees to enhance athletes’ running experience.

This race has in the past attracted athletes from all provinces, hoping the same this year.

Total cash prizes this year have been increased from R25 000 to R35 000 with the winners of the marathon and half marathon receiving R2 500 and R1 500 respectively.

Although pre-entries have closed, late entries will open on Friday from 14:00 to19:00 as well as on Saturday morning between 04:00 to 05:45. Entry fees are R190 for the 42.2km; R150 for the 21.1km; R80 for the 10 km race, R20 for the 4.9k5 fun run as well as R30 for the temporary license.

In the interest of the safety of participating athletes and members of the public, road users are advised to take note that the 39th Secunda Marathon will be run in the streets of Secunda on 16 February 2019 and to adhere to the marshals and traffic officials from the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality who will be on duty to direct athletes and minimise impact on motorists.
