FrieslandCampina opens distribution centre in Meppel

Today is the day of the festive opening of the new distribution centre of FrieslandCampina DC Noord in Meppel (NL). In this distribution centre, FrieslandCampina will store and transfer dairy products coming from its production locations in Beilen (NL) and Meppel and from here transport these products towards the export markets. The sustainably built distribution centre provides more efficiency of transport and this substantially reduces the annual COemission.

The new centre was festively opened amidst loud applause by FrieslandCampina Ingredients president Kathy Fortmann and the mayor of Meppel, Mr Korteland. Kathy Fortmann: “The distribution centre means a lot to FrieslandCampina and the neighbourhood. Meppel is a favourable, central location and easily accessible both by road and by water. The sustainable construction and more efficient transport makes a considerable contribution to the reduction of the CO2 emission.”

Favourable location

The distribution centre, with a surface of 31,000 square metres, is meant for storage and transfer of dairy products for export markets such as China, Hong Kong, Russia and Greece and replaces distribution centres in Meppel, Hoogeveen, Heerenveen and Veendam (all NL). The centre can accommodate 43,000 pallets and with this covers an area of about five football pitches. Meppel was selected because of its favourable location. From DC Noord, dairy products can be transported straight to the port of Rotterdam by water, which really simplifies the chain. More than 9,000 export containers and 8,000 truckloads will annually be handled. The location is also easily accessible by road and provides good connections with the rest of the world.

Reduction of CO2 emission

DC Noord offers about 35 jobs and complies with the latest requirements in the areas of food safety and fire safety. The centre has been built using sustainable materials and is durable in use. For this the building has obtained the BREAAM sustainability certification “Very Good”. It is expected that apart from annual efficiency savings, a substantial reduction of 1.5 million transport kilometres will be achieved, which comes down to a reduction of CO2 emission by 650,000 kg. This equals an annual saving of 28 households or driving a truck 37 times around the world.

FrieslandCampina deploys external parties for the distribution and leases the distribution centre.
