David and Beverly Sedlacek tackle family dysfunction in self-help guide to emotional healing

The authors go straight to the source of emotional and relational problems – dysfunctional families – in their spiritual self-help book.

Buchanan, MI, USA – WEBWIRE

This book reveals a path to emotional healing from childhood family trauma, among others.

Therapist and licensed clinical social worker David Sedlacek and his wife Beverly, a psychiatric-mental health clinical nurse specialist, published a third edition of their book “Cleansing the Sanctuary of the Heart: Tools for Emotional Healing” (ReadersMagnet; 2018).

The profound mission of the Sedlaceks, both mental health professionals involved in Christian ministry in various capacities, is to help survivors of many emotional and relational challenges - mental and emotional disorders, abuse, relationship problems, and compulsive addictions – heal so they may restore intimate relationship with God.

In “Cleansing the Sanctuary of the Heart,” the Sedlaceks discuss at length the problems of brokenness and personal baggage from dysfunction, abuse, and addiction in the family, even devoting a sub-chapter (“The Cycle of Dysfunction”) to the matter. The sub-chapter outlines how one’s dysfunctional and emotionally distant childhood family life can lead to a lifelong cycle of pain and, worse, apartness from God.

“The family has always been God’s appointed institution for perfecting the characters of its members,” said the authors. “It is the vehicle through which God intends that we prepare to go to heaven… By his attacks on this divine institution, Satan has been successful in creating dysfunction in many families.”

How does family dysfunction look like? When parents fail to meet their child’s basic needs, wounding and loss occur, and ungodly behaviors and responses soon manifest in attempts to fill these unmet needs. There are many causes of dysfunction, including poverty, social injustice, and war. The most deeply wounded are children; as a result, they stifle their feelings that are commonly identified as anger, shame, abandonment, loneliness, feeling unloved, abused… and the list goes on.

The authors term addiction as “a device that the enemy uses most skillfully to destroy families.”

“Addictions radically alter the sacred give and take of an intimate relationship, whether that relationship is a friendship, a marriage, or a parent/child relationship.”

It is the great hope of the Sedlaceks that through “Cleansing the Sanctuary of the Heart,” families can be healed and restored to the high and holy order to which they have been called by God and that the cycle of dysfunction – and sin – can be broken. The book reveals God’s plan and process to provide healing and freedom for survivors of emotional and relational challenges.
