FDA and CDC Investigate Salmonella Outbreak Possibly Linked to Popular Cake Mix

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced the agency was investigating a manufacturing facility that made cake mixes that might be linked to a recent outbreak of Salmonella. The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have informed the cake mix manufacturer that a sample of one of their cake mixes contained Salmonella Agbeni and through DNA analysis, matched the Salmonella collected from ill persons reported to the CDC.

While at the time of the announcement it had not been definitively concluded that this product is linked to the outbreak and the investigation was still ongoing, the cake mix manufacturer did issue a voluntary recall of four varieties of cake mix. Over 2 million packages of the cake mixes are part of the massive recall.

According to the recall notice, “Several of the individuals reported consuming a cake mix at some point prior to becoming ill, and some may have also consumed these products raw and not baked. Consumers are reminded not to consume any raw batter. Cake mixes and batter can be made with ingredients such as eggs or flour which can carry risks of bacteria that are rendered harmless by baking, frying or boiling. Consumers are reminded to wash their hands, work surfaces, and utensils thoroughly after contact with raw batter products, to follow baking instructions, and to never eat raw batter.”

The products in question were distributed for resale in the United States and to some foreign countries. Those who have purchased the recalled cake mixes are advised not to consume them and to return them to the store where originally purchased.

“At EMSL Analytical, Inc., our food scientists help to prevent these types of foodborne illness outbreaks and costly product recalls by providing a comprehensive range of microbial testing services,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Raw material, finished product and surface testing in food plants can be instrumental in averting these types of illnesses and events.
