Quote: An Air Force veteran reflects on the realities of his transition to civilian life after many years in the military.

What was supposed to be a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Air Force to just figure out what he wanted to do with his life turned out to be a 30-year career in the Air Force for Clarence E. “Kip” Vold. He narrates his experiences in his autobiography “Farmer’s Son, Military Career” (Page Publishing; 2015).

“When my terminal leave started, I felt that my life no longer had any purposes and that first weekend was frustrating for me,” the author admitted in his book. “However, we had many boxes to unpack and get our apartment ready to live in and that kept me busy enough that I got over that feeling of helplessness, at least partially. After that, we enjoyed the time together with me no longer working and soon it was time for me to start college classes.”

The author also opened up about the financial dilemma he faced toward his return to college. Having spent a very long time in the military, he had used up much of his Vietnam GI Bill benefits. Finding a college – one that would give him credit for his military experience and college courses taken while in active duty – also proved to be challenging.

What was more challenging for the author was the job hunt after college graduation. He experienced rejection from employers due to his age and his plans were affected by family matters and medical reasons.

The author’s experience with transition from military to civilian life will provide service members the insights they need to make their own transition.
