Sarah is big sister to Joey, her four-year-old brother; they live with their parents in a nice blue house, behind which is a large hill. Mrs. Brannigan, as the children’s book suggests, lives alone with a cat. Granny Brannigan, as the children affectionately call her, would wait by her front gate to give chocolate cookies to all the boys and girls on their way home from school.
But one day, Mrs. Brannigan does not come out because she is not feeling well. Sarah becomes distressed so she visits the old woman to see if she could help and keep her company. In the middle of their conversation, Sarah mentions the big hill behind her home. At that, Mrs. Brannigan gives her four packets of poppy seeds.
