A children’s book to eliminate the stigma of Down syndrome

“Maxwell Goes to the Zoo” (Xulon Press, 2016) by Lisa Van Drese is a children’s book like no other. First of all, it is a tribute to her son Max and all children with Down syndrome – overachievers “who happen to rock an extra chromosome.” Second, it is a children’s book with a great message. Online Book Club, an online community of book lovers, gave the book four out of four stars.

Max was just six weeks old when the author decided to write him a story that he could relate to. She did not intend to publish her story until her pastor read it and suggested Xulon Press, a Christian publishing company, to her. What initially was supposed to be a personalized gift for her children becomes an essential resource for parents and educators in connecting with children with Down syndrome.

Although it is not mentioned in “Maxwell Goes to the Zoo,” the main character Maxwell was born with Down syndrome but is the epitome of a happy little boy. It is obvious that the character is inspired by the author’s own son. Through her book, the author hopes to spread the message that there is no difference between children with and without Down syndrome.

“What I particularly like about the book is that there are a lot of kids’ books out there that are about Down syndrome but they all tend to focus on what is different. I like to focus on people with DS as being as unique as any one of us,” the author told a local new media. “I really like to spread the word that children need to be played with nonstop whether they have DS or not.”
