“Where Have You Gone, Billy Mayfair?” - A Novel of the Vigilante West

Jerry Delaney brings a novel that will bring light to the history during the Civil War and vigilante violence. He writes a rousing dramatic story that surely draws readers in and making them eager to know what happens next. “Where Have You Gone, Billy Mayfair?” narrates a storyline that follows a sixteen-year-old young man named Billy Mayfair and his journey. The novel begins when he was kicked out of his home in Illinois by his father. After that, he sets out to find a fortune in gold in a remote camp that is now known as the Montana Territory.
 
His journey brings him to St. Louis where he loses what was left of his money and he gets into a fight that lands him in jail. However, he manages to save enough by working in a Union hospital that cared for Civil War casualties in order to get 2,000 miles north of Fort Benton. In the town of Bannack, he becomes friends with the sheriff who is known to become the most notorious outlaw in Montana History.
 
From there, the author takes Billy’s journey to where he witnesses the deadliest outbreak of vigilante violence in U.S. history: twenty-one men are hanged in less than a month. As the author sheds light into this moment in the history of the Vigilante West, it gives voice to both the victims and victors of this true-to-life event.
 
As readers uncover Billy’s story of adventure and self-discovery, it also highlights what makes this story a serious reflection on history. It effectively shows how the vigilante winners were able to influence the history books to reflect their biased point of view.
