Juan Fernando Quintero, River Plate player, won the Santander Fair Play Trophy today after showing fair play throughout the entire Conmebol Libertadores competition and during the final match. River Plate was crowned champion today after defeating Boca Juniors in Madrid during the second leg of the final. Juan Manuel Cendoya, group senior executive vice president of Communications, Corporate Marketing and Research at Banco Santander, presented the trophy to the player on the field at the end of the match.

In addition to showing fair play in all of the competition matches he played, Juan Fernando Quintero did not see any yellow card and, as such, earned the 2018 Santander Fair Play Trophy.

Juan Manuel Cendoya stated: “We’re very proud to promote fair play in football and Libertadores as well as the sporting values of respecting your rival, working as a team, team spirit and doing your very best. Also, symbolically we had a boy and a girl with us as a representative of all young Latin Americans who are the future of football and society, to promote fair play on and off the field. We support football because it’s the sport with the biggest impact on society and the greatest capacity to improve people’s lives; and our mission is to help people and businesses prosper.”

Banco Santander invited some children to go with the players and referees to the field while holding the fair play flag. Some of these children were from five NGOs with which Santander cooperates regularly: Fundación Aladina, Fundación Prodis, Down Madrid, Uno entre cien mil and Common Goal. Others were children of the bank’s employees.

Banco Santander released a chest-level point-of-view shot recorded at Santiago Bernabéu showing the children’s experience when they went into the stadium. Link to watch and download below.

Banco Santander sponsors the Conmebol Libertadores competition since 2008; this is the main club-level competition in Latin America. The bank has also sponsored other major football tournaments in the region for the last 11 years. In Europe, it sponsors the Champions League, the main club football championship in the world, as well as LaLiga Santander in Spain. Santander launched the “Football Can” international campaign in August which kicked off the sponsorship and explains the bank’s support for football, the sport with the greatest impact on society and the ability to improve people’s lives.
