Pica8, a leading provider of advanced, open networking software, today announced that it has ported its popular Linux-based PICOS® network operating system (NOS) to Dell EMC’s high-end S4100-ON series of open networking enterprise 10G Ethernet switches. Already proven in multiple Fortune 100 enterprise deployments, PICOS will now support Dell EMC’s S4148T-ON, S4112T-ON, S4148F-ON, S4128F-ON, and S4112F-ON enterprise campus aggregation switches. All of these switches support the Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) standard that allows PICOS to easily load onto the platforms for deployment.

With this porting effort, Pica8 now offers an open NOS for these switches that includes a large enterprise feature set capable of matching legacy infrastructure vendor offerings in the campus aggregation networks of Fortune 1000-class companies.

Running PICOS, both the Dell EMC S4100-ON aggregation switches and the Pica8-supported Dell EMC N3000-ON access switches can now be deployed in a modern leaf-spine campus/branch office architecture and managed as a single, logical switch with a single IP address via Pica8’s optional PicaPilot™ automated switch orchestration and management application.

Not only does this new Dell EMC/Pica8 pairing help slash the cost and complexity of existing Layer 2/Layer 3 enterprise networks, but PICOS also brings an integrated, Open Intent-Based Networking (OIBN) capability to every switch port in a network via Pica8’s CrossFlowTM, a Pica8-only feature that allows for concurrent control of all switch ports by both L2/L3 and SDN/OpenFlow. This gives customers granular control of security, policy, and visibility in a live L2/L3 network without impacting ongoing data traffic.
