Three leading international companies have formed a world-class consortium to support the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s clean-up programme.

Serco, Bechtel and BWXT have joined forces in a consortium that combines their proven track records of service delivery, nuclear site management and clean-up capability. The consortium is committed to the safe, secure and environmentally sensitive management of the NDA’s sites and to supporting the economic regeneration of the surrounding communities.

Serco Chief Executive, Christopher Hyman said: “Safely and efficiently operating these sites whilst supporting the local communities is one of the country’s biggest responsibilities. Enhancing nuclear site operations and managing the decommissioning work is a real challenge and demands the very best in nuclear and change management skills. This consortium is tailor-made for just that.”

Craig Weaver, Executive Vice President, Bechtel said: “This consortium brings together the best of British and US nuclear site experience to address the UK’s decommissioning challenge. With our combined skills and experience, we believe that we are perfectly teamed to deliver safe and secure site remediation and to further develop the UK’s nuclear skills base.”

BWXT President and Chief Operating Officer John A. Fees said: “We look forward to our participation in this world-class consortium and bringing our expertise in nuclear operations to the team. Our skills and expertise, fully integrated with that of our team members, will enhance the consortium’s ability to deliver safe and secure nuclear operations at NDA sites.”

Serco, a leading international service company, is based in the UK. More than 20,000 UK public sector employees have successfully transferred to Serco to deliver improved public services across the science, defence, transport, education, health, IT and local government sectors. Its nuclear related operations include safety and environmental advice at many NDA sites and for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet. Serco is also part of the consortium that manages the Atomic Weapons Establishment.

Bechtel is one of the world’s premier engineering, construction and project management companies. Bechtel has been present in the UK for more than fifty years with recent projects including the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and West Coast Route Modernization. In the US, Bechtel is the leading nuclear clean-up contractor for the US Department of Energy and is currently working at seven major Department of Energy nuclear sites across the US.

BWXT is a premier manager of complex, high-consequence nuclear security operations. As an industry leader in nuclear materials handling, processing, safeguards and security, BWXT manages active nuclear operations, environmental remediation and closure sites at U.S. Department of Energy facilities throughout the United States. BWXT is a subsidiary of McDermott International, a worldwide energy services company.
