Goodyear winter tires assure a great performance in all winter conditions

Award-winning winter tire manufacturer Goodyear is reminding drivers that they should not wait for snow or Santa Claus to arrive before they swap to winter tires.

Here, Goodyear explains why drivers should make the change:

1.   What are winter tires?

Winter tires are different from their summer counterparts, engineered from a different, softer compound to stay flexible as temperatures drop. This, combined with a special tread pattern, provides superior road grip to optimize a vehicle’s performance in cold, icy and snowy conditions. They improve vehicle safety by improving traction and grip when braking.

2.   When should I drive on winter tires?

From around the start of November until mid-April, as these are the coldest months. If the weather dips below 7°C, winter tires will perform better than summer tires. We suggest the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance SUV Gen-1, which won Auto Bild Allrad’s winter tire test earlier this year.

3.   What are the benefits of winter tires?

If you brake in wintery conditions, winter tires could cut your braking distance in half compared to summer tires [1]. Braking in snow with Goodyear winter tires at a speed of 50 km/h could make your car stop after 26.4 meters – compared to 77.9 meters on standard summer tires [2].  The UltraGrip Performance SUV Gen-1 tire, for example, achieves superior braking performance thanks to the optimized position of the vertical blinds and the beveled rubber surfaces, which both improve grip, brake power and traction on snowy and frozen roads. ActiveGrip technology further improves the tire’s grip and braking performance.

In addition to a significantly shorter braking distance, winter tires also provide excellent handling and a good steering response in all winter conditions, enabling the driver to stay in control at all times. Winter tires feature multiple edges and sipes that dig into the snow to provide extra grip. With the UltraGrip Performance SUV Gen-1, for example, the 3D Block Interlocking System (BIS) tread profile ensures better adhesion on dry roads and improved performance in snow. This tire also offers more stability as a larger part of the rubber tire touches the surface.

Both the shorter braking distance and excellent handling give drivers the confidence boost they need to face hills, bridges and sharp corners in unfavorable winter weather conditions. On top of that, the durability of winter tires easily exceeds those of summer tires used during the winter months. Finally, the UltraGrip Performance SUV Gen-1’s tread optimal performance (TOP) indicator warns drivers to replace the tires when necessary – guaranteeing optimal performance in winter.

4.   In which EU countries are winter tires mandatory?

Regulations on the use of winter tires vary widely across Europe. For example, there are no rules in Iceland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ukraine or Cyprus. However, winter tires are mandatory for all cars throughout a fixed period and on all roads – regardless of the weather conditions – in countries such as Norway, Finland, Russia, Belarus, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Slovenia. To ensure a safe holiday trip, Goodyear recommends checking the specific winter requirements for each country.
