Book Reviews Regard Wayne Allen’s Book as a Strong Foundation and Resource for the Study of The Athapaskan Matriliny and Trade
Opening readers’ eyes to the investigation of the lineage of the Athapaskan-speaking people, the author’s thorough research in the “Athapaskan Matriliny and Trade in Canada and Alaska” will greatly appeal to scholars and students of anthropology and history.
Indeed, Allen’s book is a worthwhile read that’s perfect for scholars and researchers looking for in-depth studies about the trade and matriliny of these Pacific Northwest tribes.
Wayne W. Allen’s master’s thesis is a scholarly research that digs deep into how the Athapaskan-speaking groups in both Alaska and Canada have carried on a rare custom of tracing their lineage through their mothers instead of their fathers.
“Athapaskan Matriliny and Trade in Canada and Alaska” expertly presents the author’s arguments which he suspects are coming from the group’s local trading practices specifically with another matrilineal tribe called the Tlingit. Ultimately, Allen provides clarity to previous assumptions from other scholars studying about Northern America’s matriliny through substantial evidence that connects the pieces of the puzzle together.
Moreover, professional book reviews further cement the reliability of his study. For one, Kirkus Reviews regard’s Allen’s book as “deliberative and well-documented” and “manages to condense a wide body of research into one cohesive argument.” On the other hand, Foreword Clarion views this book as “a foundation for further research into Pacific Northwest tribes” and BlueInk Review says that it is a “valuable resource for researchers studying this subject.”
Indeed, Allen’s book is a worthwhile read that’s perfect for scholars and researchers looking for in-depth studies about the trade and matriliny of these Pacific Northwest tribes.
