Kelsey, the main character, at 11 years old was left by her dad. She and her mother struggled as her mother had no job and had no skills to look for one. She got a summer job cleaning horse stalls at Blue Ribbon Downs. Now her daughter Kelsey is 16 years old and cleans horse stalls and feeds horses at Derbyrun Downs.

With her job, she gets to bond with a three-year-old American Quarter horse stallion, Tomar El Oro. She has fun tending to the horse. Another one that is making her job a lot lighter is Blaine Carthege, the security guard at Derbyrun Downs. On one of her working days, she overhears conspirators planning to bribe a jockey to throw a race. Tomar gets sick and another horse dies, possibly because of the use of battery acid. The track is quarantined after an outbreak of vesicular stomatitis. During the 30-day lockdown, rumors spread out regarding a horse-killer, insurance fraud, and quarrels between rival trainers. Kelsey sets out to guard Tomar and is suspicious of anyone who gets near him, including Blaine.

Kelsey’s dad shows up with a new wife and new-found faith being a Christian. She gets curious over this faith that changed her father. Tension gets added to the whole situation.
