Asthma Cases Spike in Puerto Rico Following 2017 Hurricane Season

Zimmetry Environmental provides indoor environmental testing and consulting services to identify and resolve exposure risks to asthma triggers, allergens and respiratory irritants.

Mold is a very well documented asthma trigger for many who suffer from the condition and exposure to exhaust from generators doesn’t help anyone with a respiratory condition.

Earlier this year, NBC News published the article, “Puerto Rico faces a spike in asthma cases following Hurricane Maria.” The investigative report specifically looked at the aftermath of the storm that left residents with “mold-producing wreckage across the island and forcing many to use fume-spewing generators for power.” One doctor, interviewed for the piece that treats patients in a working-class neighborhood, gave her view of how asthma rates have increased when she said, “It has increased so, so, so much after the hurricane.”

Over the past year, exposure to asthma triggers has increased dramatically for many residents. This is due to the fact that not only were countless properties damaged and soaked during and after Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit the islands, the lack of power after these storms in so many areas allowed stagnant, humid air to fester indoors.  All of this made for the perfect breeding ground for the growth of mold indoors. Piles of building and plant debris in some neighborhoods also made for elevated outdoor mold levels in many areas.

“Mold is a very well documented asthma trigger for many who suffer from the condition and exposure to exhaust from generators doesn’t help anyone with a respiratory condition,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “A year after all the property damage and there are still far too many people on the islands that are living, working or going to school in conditions with elevated mold levels.”

On the frontlines helping residents, business owners and property managers identify and resolve mold issues and other air quality concerns are the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) experts at Zimmetry Environmental. They provide air testing and monitoring services to identify biological and chemical asthma triggers, allergens and respiratory irritants. If asthma triggers or other concerns are discovered, their professionals can help to resolve underlying issues to help create a healthy indoor environments for all Puerto Ricans and visitors to the islands.
