Telenor Group endorses the Paris Call for Trust and Security in Cyberspace

Connectivity and the internet have become an integral part of all aspects of human life, and play a key role in empowering societies across the globe. However, at the same time cyber-attacks represent an increasing threat to individuals, societies and infrastructure. When global connectivity is paired with sophisticated attacks by both state and non-state threat actors, increased action must be taken to protect the safety, privacy and security of individuals and their societies.

Telenor Group recognises its role in fighting cybercrime as a provider of telecommunication services.

“Cybersecurity is about protecting people in their digital life. We work hard to ensure that our customers, with their information and interactions, remain safe with Telenor. Our security efforts are ever increasing in line with the changing threat picture. Collaboration between governments, the private sector and civil society is essential to mitigate cyber threats and create new global standards to improve cyber protection for citizens. That is why we are proud to be among the first signatories to the Paris Call for Trust and Security in Cyberspace,” says André Årnes, SVP and Chief Security Officer, Telenor Group.

The Paris Call for Trust and Security in Cyberspace has been signed by countries and businesses alike. No business or country can meet this challenge alone, and joining forces across borders, industries, civil society and governmental bodies is key to improve trust, security and stability in cyberspace. The Paris Call sees the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime as central to this work.

“In the same way we cannot realise the Paris agreement to combat climate change with only state actors at the table, we cannot advance cyber security on a global scale without civil society and industry having a seat at the table. We are all sisters and brothers in cyberspace,” adds Årnes.

The Paris Call helps move international efforts forward by calling for action in three areas:

• Protecting against indiscriminate or systemic cyberattacks against individuals or civilian infrastructure;
• Protecting against attacks against the broad availability of the internet; and
• Protecting against foreign interference with electoral processes.
