Her vivid descriptions of her colorful and wonderful life that highlights the beauty of breaking the barriers and overcoming the challenges that shaped her into becoming the woman that she is today

When she was little, Shirley Robinson Sprinkles began her education during a time when public schools and other public entities in America were racially segregated. In her memoir, she details her first-hand experiences growing up in a society where African-American citizens like her don’t have access to the same opportunities, facilities, and services as everyone else.

In “From Dunbar to Destiny,” she details her journey in the hopes to remind readers that it takes determination and perseverance in order to succeed. She highlights how her experiences serve as a motivation to strive hard in order to achieve her goals despite the kind of reality she grew up in. From there, she also narrates the time when racial segregations in public schools were lifted.  As her studies in Dunbar Elementary and Junior High were coming to an end, she expresses her thoughts, feelings, and hesitations toward the forthcoming integration; she had many reservations about what it could mean.

Despite these reservations, she emphasizes how the change inspired her to create her own path to destiny. She talks about the environment and the people from this special school that taught and inspired her to work hard to achieve her goals in life. Most of all, it is her vivid descriptions of her colorful and wonderful life that highlights the beauty of breaking the barriers and overcoming the challenges that shaped her into becoming the woman that she is today.

Indeed, her heartwarming and honest memoir has inspired many hearts during her successful participation in the 2018 Miami Book Fair International from November 11-18, 2018. With thousands of individuals who took part in the event, it truly was an experience like no other.

About the Author
Shirley Robinson Sprinkles was born in Greenville, Texas, but she calls Tucson, Arizona her hometown. She attended Tucson schools from First through the Eleventh Grade; one of them, Dunbar Elementary and Junior High, was a segregated school for Black students. Much of this book describes what it was like to experience the education, socialization, and inspiration that this special school and its teachers provided. It was an environment that Shirley credits for shaping her determination to succeed beyond barriers of race, economics, and local norms.

In 1955, Shirley moved to Los Angeles, California, where she finished high school and college. She graduated from UCLA in 1960 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education prior to her first marriage. Later, she received a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Cal State-Los Angeles and, ultimately, many years later, earned a Ph.D. in Educational Administration at the University of Texas at Austin (1994).

After moving to Texas, Shirley held positions as State Program Director for Site-Based Decision-Making and Planning, Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Project, and as a Regional Sales and Marketing representative of Norm-Referenced Assessments for a national publishing company.  Her memoir, “From Dunbar to Destiny; One Woman’s Journey Through Desegregation and Beyond,” chronicles her experiences along the long path from there to here.

Today, Shirley is retired and lives happily with her husband of 18 years in Austin, Texas. She still pursues post-retirement volunteer service as Educational Consultant to school districts by coaching teachers toward more effective instruction.
