It’s time to move from words to actions on an equal partnership with Africa

ONE calls EU leaders to increase aid in the EU’s next long-term budget

Ahead of the next European Council meeting, ONE is calling EU leaders to start building up a new partnership with Africa on equal footing. One key element to set off this partnership is that EU leaders commit to fulfill the 0.7% ODA/GNI target by 2030.

Friederike Röder, EU and France Director at The ONE Campaign, said:

“The time to build an equal, ambitious partnership with Africa is now. By 2050 Africa’s youth will be 10 times the size of the EU’s. Now is the time for EU leaders to think and act strategically. First and foremost, it takes two to tango but the African countries are absent while the EU discusses the new so-called equal partnership. Secondly, private investments alone won’t suffice. There is no alternative to more public investments in basic education and health. The EU needs to meet its international commitment to allocate 0.7% ODA/GNI by 2030 and increase aid to €140bn in the next Multiannual Financial Framework. This aid is the best investment we can make into our common future.”
