Many Christians have a hard time understanding the term “boundaries” in the biblical context not only because they do not know how they look like but are also unaware of their God’s purpose in the life of his children. Mental health professionals and ministry workers David and Beverly Sedlacek discuss the topic at length in the third edition of their self-help book “Cleansing the Sanctuary of the Heart: Tools for Emotional Healing” (ReadersMagnet; 2018).

While the Sedlaceks maintain that boundaries define one’s self and help individuals stay healthy in relationships, they connect the topic to the premise of their book, cleansing the sanctuary of the heart. Jesus as our example, set healthy boundaries with his family, his disciples, church leadership, and his enemies. He was able to do this because he knew his purpose and mission. He was able to say “no” when he meant it rather than say “yes” when he did not.

“The family has always been God’s appointed institution for perfecting the characters of its members,” the Sedlaceks state. “It is the vehicle through which God intends that we prepare to go to heaven… By his attacks on this divine institution, Satan has been successful in creating dysfunction in many families.” Satan’s attack on the family manifests itself through addictions that come in many faces and maintain the cycle of family dysfunction, pain, trauma, and separation from God.

The authors affirm God as “our protector, our boundary, the rock under our feet, the shield in front of us, the rear guard behind us, and the hedge all around us, and our strength and power.”

“The concept of boundaries implies a place of safety, protection, strength, power, and limit setting,” said the Sedlaceks.
