Family dynamics change as parents enter their golden years; parent-child roles are usually reversed. With elderly parents’ cognitive and physical health declining, they will most likely be sent to nursing homes. But reliable nursing homes are hard to find. In Austine Royer Smith’s new book, “Present Bouquets,” she shares the wisdom she’d gained from spending a wonderful decade with her elderly mother.

After learning of an aunt’s experience with the horrors of nursing homes, Austine Royer Smith decided to move in with her eighty-four-year-old mother. She was not expecting much, but the ten years she spent with her mother were some of the best times she had. She was able to face the ugly memories of her childhood that kept her from happiness.

Contrary to what most people believe, old age does not necessarily make the elderly weak and lethargic. “Present Bouquets” shows Austine’s mother as an optimistic and lively woman. They’d even travel together with no problem at all.

“I pray that this story will influence others to obey the Fifth Commandment and take loving care of their elderly parents and not stick them in nursing homes of which some are just ‘parking spaces for funeral homes’,” says Austine Royer Smith.

“Present Bouquets” is now available in selected bookstores. More information on Austine Royer Smith and her other works is available in at www.austineroyersmith-author.com.
