Time Inc.’s MONEY Names Deserve Edu the Best Credit Card for Students in 2018

MENLO PARK, Calif. – WEBWIRE

Deserve, an analytics-based financial technology company that uses machine learning and alternative data to help people build credit and achieve financial independence, today announced that Deserve Edu, the company’s flagship credit card, has been named the best student credit card in 2018 by Time Inc.’s MONEY.

“We are proud to have our Deserve Edu MasterCard recognized as the best credit card for students by MONEY,” said Kalpesh Kapadia, CEO and founder of Deserve. “Our unique approach to providing credit access to this demographic is solving a real pain point for the millions of college students in the US who are new to credit and too often neglected by traditional lending models.”

The Deserve Edu Mastercard was honored as the best credit card for students because its features and rewards are tailored specifically for the lifestyle and needs of college students. The card has no annual fee and is available to students who lack credit history, which is a benefit other credit cards for college students do not typically offer. To help cardholders who are new to credit avoid accumulating too much debt, the card poses restrictions that act as financial guardrails—for example, you have no ability to transfer a balance or get cash advances. Deserve Edu also comes with a rewards program built for students, which includes an 18-month Amazon Prime Student subscription – a $59 value – for free, as well as no foreign transaction fees and a low late fee of $25.

Deserve’s mission is to provide access to credit to millions of students without a credit card, even if they do not qualify for traditional lending based on the FICO system. FICO is based on your credit history, which students who are just starting out naturally lack. Deserve empowers this population to access credit and become financially independent by using a proprietary algorithm to predict credit potential instead of only assessing credit history. Unlike traditional lenders, which analyze a person’s risk when determining creditworthiness, Deserve considers consumer attributes like education, current financial health, and future employability to determine a person’s potential.

MONEY produces its annual Best Credit Cards list to showcase the top credit card options for every financial use. For 2018-2019, MONEY partnered with MagnifyMoney, a leading personal finance site providing news, resources and unbiased comparisons of financial products, to sift through hundreds of cards and narrow down the credit card options to a set of finalists within nine different categories. MONEY’s editorial staff was solely responsible for choosing the winners. This year’s list of distinguished winners also includes Chase, Capital One, and Amazon.
