Author Pens an Emotional Book about a Dysfunctional LDS Family

“The written word is truth, knowledge, and fortune, especially for those who are left behind. I give credit to my parents. My father had written the journal entry of August 10, 1934, which endeared me to a battered national monument. My mother photographed him standing in front of it, and she wrote the letter promising her children she would be home for Christmas,” Eve adds.

Jefferson, WV. Author Eve Gwartney presents “At the Feet of Serenity,” a story based on her family’s struggles and triumphs. The story follows Henry Clayland and the lengths he goes through to keep his family together. Grace died and left five motherless children.

In 1934, Grace, Eve’s mother, photographed her favorite statue, a national monument named Serenity: The Statue of Friendship. Throughout the decades, Serenity’s destruction caused by vandals parallels the adversities of Grace’s five motherless children. Destruction in the Clayland family comes just as it comes to many families struggling to make everything right in a world full of mistrust, selfishness, and defiance.

The family attempts to adhere to their Mormon faith as they face the challenges of parenthood and poverty. Derek, introduced at the beginning of the story, becomes the focus of the family drama. As an adult, Derek will defy social norms and embrace an unconventional lifestyle - polygamy. Serenity suffers and becomes symbolic of hope for the Restoration of Family.
