EUR 124,000 in emergency aid provided to farmers in Shandong and Jiangsu provinces

Leverkusen – WEBWIRE

On 19 August Typhoon Rumbia hit China. Farmers in the Chinese provinces of Shandong and Jiangsu have been badly hit by following severe flooding. Over 9.5 million people´s lives were affected. Bayer China is providing them with EUR 124,000 in emergency aid from its disaster relief program. The donations will be used to support reconstruction of agricultural facilities in the two provinces, which are among the most important farming regions in China. The money will be handed over to the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, from where it will immediately passed on to the farmers most badly affected by the extreme weather. This Foundation has long been Bayer’s strategic partner in disaster relief.

Additional 1 ton of Crop Science products were also donated, in order to rapidly restore agriculture production. At the same time, 500 hours of pro-bono and volunteer service is committed to support local community rebuilt in 2 years.

Disaster relief is one aspect of Bayer’s corporate societal engagement. In order to help people facing acute hardship as a result of natural disasters, Bayer China pursues a twin strategy: on one hand, provision of short-term emergency aid – whether it be donations of money or in kind of products; on the other hand, the company also facilitate and support employee participation as volunteers in rebuild phase.

Only a few days earlier, Bayer had provided emergency aid to the victims of the severe flooding in the Indian state of Kerala. The Concern India Foundation was given EUR 100,000 to provide speedy medical assistance to those in need.

In 2017, Bayer supported 12 emergency aid projects with donations of money and medicines as well as donations in kind totaling over EUR 1.3 million.

Apart from supporting disaster relief, Bayer globally contributes EUR 49 million every year – with the focus on promoting frontier science and social innovations connected to the UN’s Global Development Goals of Zero Hunger and Health and Well-Being.
