Unisys to Support Boeing-led Effort to Secure U.S. Borders

Securing border areas between points of entry will begin in Tucson Sector

BLUE BELL, Pa., October 26, 2006 – Unisys Corp. (NYSE: UIS) announced today that it is set to begin work on the first phase of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Secure Border Initiative (SBI) effort, SBInet. Unisys is part of the Boeing-led team that was awarded the contract Sept. 21. The contract will be performed over three years with three one-year options.



SBInet calls for a mix of technology and infrastructure that will provide U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) with an integrated border enforcement solution.



Using the 3D Visible Enterprise (3D-VE) approach – a comprehensive look into all layers and interdependencies of an operation – Unisys worked with CBP experts, former border patrol agents and engineers to model concepts of operations that would enable optimal border control.



This allowed the team to convert the customer’s statement of objectives into requirements for the Boeing team to address in the proposal. Unisys will continue to support Boeing’s ongoing modeling and simulation to tailor the solution to each increment of the border.



Unisys will enable real-time information sharing that will help border patrol agents approach a situation with the appropriate resources and determine the proper law enforcement resolution for each person apprehended. Ultimately, Unisys will integrate biometric authentication into the system capabilities. Then, agents will be able to capture 10 finger prints from those they apprehend and compare the prints instantly with those stored in government databases.

As the program gets underway, Unisys will integrate, deploy and maintain the information systems necessary for CBP to predict, detect, identify, classify, respond, apprehend and process people who attempt illegal border crossings. In partnership with CBP’s Office of Information Technology, Unisys will supply systems and infrastructure that deliver timely information directly to agents and field officers and that enable collaboration with various federal, state, local and other response and enforcement agencies.

Unisys homeland security credentials include long histories both in biometrics integration and border security programs. Earlier this month, the company announced that its Australian subsidiary signed a contract with Australia’s Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs for a biometrically enabled identity authentication that will begin at immigration detention centers and ultimately move to airports.



In June, Citizenship and Immigration Canada awarded Unisys Canadian subsidiary a contract for a six-month biometrics field-trial using fingerprint and facial recognition technologies at several Canadian ports of entry.
