Heinemann Marks Fifth Year of Fellowship Initiative with Third Cohort of Educators

Heinemann, a division of global learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, today announced the 2018 Heinemann Fellows, a diverse group of eleven teachers, coaches and administrators who exemplify the highest professional standards and a passionate commitment to students. Chosen from a host of highly qualified candidates, these educators will use their Fellowships to engage in collaborative professional learning and action research aimed at advancing the teaching profession.
 “The Heinemann Fellowship program is the most important work we’re doing today,” said Vicki Boyd, EVP and General Manager of Heinemann. “It is the living embodiment of our mission. As these educators learn alongside their students, we learn alongside them. We learn how to support a teaching practice that is about listening and responding to children.”
The cohort represents a range of grade levels, content areas, and backgrounds. As part of the two-year Heinemann Fellowship program, the group will meet regularly to share findings and feedback. Together, they will refine data gathering, inform further research plans, and help interpret results. Their research projects will be informed by their own personal experiences as teachers.
“Heinemann Fellows are a group of educators with boundless curiosity about children, teaching and learning,” said Ellin Oliver Keene, National Literacy Expert and Heinemann author, who chairs the Heinemann Fellows program. “The members of this cohort share a fervent desire to stand alongside children and colleagues to create better classrooms and schools with the long-term interest of creating a more inclusive world.”
The 2018-2020 Heinemann Fellows are:

• Irene Castillón, San Jose, Calif. Founding academic dean at Luis Valdez Academy, San Jose, Calif.
• Marian Dingle, Peachtree Corners, Ga. Fourth- and fifth-grade Montessori teacher at Briar Vista Elementary School, Atlanta, Ga.   
• Janelle W. Henderson, Louisville, Ky.   Third-grade teacher at Mill Creek Leadership Academy, Louisville, Ky.
• Julie Kwon Jee, Hopewell Junction, N.Y. English teacher at Arlington High School, LaGrangeville, N.Y.
• Brian J. Melton, Palatine, Ill. English, creative writing, and slam poetry teacher at Glenbard North High School, Carol Stream, Ill.
• Nicole Stellon O’Donnell, Fairbanks, Alaska English teacher for grades 7–12 at Golden Heart Academy, Fairbanks, Alaska
• Minjung Pai, Los Angeles, Calif. Fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Westland School, Los Angeles, Calif.
• David Rockower, Boalsburg, Pa. English teacher for grades 5–8 in the Delta Program, State College, Pa.
• Nina Sudnick, Athens, Ohio Sixth-grade math and science teacher at East Elementary School in Athens, Ohio
• Islah Tauheed, Bronx, N.Y. Second-grade teacher at PS 567 Linden Tree Elementary School, Bronx, N.Y.
• Julia E. Torres, Thornton, Colo. Language arts teacher and librarian at Denver Public Schools, Denver, Colo.

The first two cohorts of Heinemann Fellows explored wide-ranging action research projects on diverse topics, including inclusivity in the classroom, the role of visual literacy in math, social-emotional learning and empathy, identity in literacy learning, and creating a culture of revision in writer’s workshop. Many of these projects are ongoing as is Heinemann’s relationship with the Fellows in cohort one and two, and their work continues to influence the types of publishing projects Heinemann will pursue in future years.
