Residents of Puerto Rico Warned of the Potential Presence of Asbestos in Older Floor Tiles and Flooring Materials

For many years, up until the late 1970s, asbestos was added to various types of flooring materials and tiles during the manufacturing process to strengthen and increase their durability.

At some point, every home or office will need to replace its flooring due to wear and tear or to simply give an indoor space an updated look. In homes, flooring projects are a common DIY project, but many people don’t realize that tearing up some old floors could be exposing their families and guests to asbestos fibers if not done correctly.

For many years, up until the late 1970s, asbestos was added to various types of flooring materials and tiles during the manufacturing process to strengthen and increase their durability. In fact, the Minnesota Department of Health states, “Flooring, including sheet vinyl, vinyl or asphalt floor tiles and any associated paper-like backing, mastic, adhesive or glue, may contain asbestos.”

“Even left alone, old asbestos flooring tiles can become friable over time and release fibers into the air,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “However, this is especially true when asbestos-containing floor tiles or flooring materials are disturbed during renovation, remodeling or demolition activities without the proper safety precautions in place. Attempts to remove tiles and old flooring can release asbestos fibers into the air of a building or home, endangering all building occupants. The only way to know if flooring contains asbestos is to have them tested.”

To protect residents of Puerto Rico from exposure risks, there are health and safety regulations associated with asbestos-containing materials. This is particularly true if these materials may be disturbed in certain types of buildings during demolition, remodeling and renovation activities. To help families, businesses, schools and other institutions comply with these regulations and protect people’s health, Zimmetry Environmental offers comprehensive testing, monitoring and asbestos consulting services.
