Indoor Ice Arena Switches to Electrical Resurfacing Machinery to Breathe Easier

EMSL Analytical provides indoor air quality testing services and monitoring instruments to identify a wide range of airborne pollutants.

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

Recently, Michigan’s Petoskey News published a report about the local indoor ice arena’s new resurfacing machine that runs on electricity. Until earlier this year, like so many indoor ice arenas across North America, the facility depended on an ice resurfacing machine that ran on fossil fuels.

Each time the old machine was used it would release harmful exhaust gases and particulate matter (PM) into the air of the arena. These pollutants impact a significant number of people as there are approximately 5,000 indoor ice arenas in the United States and Canada and many still use fossil fueled equipment. Unfortunately, some of these facilities have ineffective building ventilation which could be exposing countless skaters, guests and employees to elevated levels of dangerous pollutants.

“As with all buildings, the indoor air quality (IAQ) of an ice arena is important for the health and safety of all building occupants,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the primary source of IAQ concerns at indoor ice arenas are due to the release of combustion pollutants. These include carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter. To help identify these exposure concerns, EMSL provides comprehensive air testing services and has monitoring equipment to identify particulate matter, combustion gases, ventilation issues and other areas of concern.”

EMSL has also sponsored an educational video about ice arenas and indoor air quality that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/FkEdmH4DLKI.
