Historical Novel Transports Readers to the Exotic World of Classic Maya
A story of survival, salvation, and the invincible power of the human spirit
Author Sally Kohonoski takes readers to a perilous journey through ancient Maya places with an adrenaline-pumping adventure.
Based on historic figures gleaned from the translations of Mayan glyphs, “Blood and Jade: A Saga of the Maya” tells of a clan’s dynastic struggle to survive in a land of jungle kingdoms, a time of warlords and heroes, and a world of magic and myth.
Kohonoski’s protagonists are Lady Quetzal and her son, Pacal. When a treacherous noble seizes the realm of Balan-Ke and massacres all the king’s children, a boy named Pacal becomes the Bone Clan’s only hope. Lady Quetzal, vowing to regain the Jade Crown, takes Pacal into exile. Hunted by the enemy, Lady Quetzal grows as both leader and mystic until the gods themselves become her allies. The unwitting subject of prophecy, Pacal, is marked by the gods, stolen by slavers, and befriended by heroes as he fights to endure and face his destiny.
“My enthusiasm for all things Maya led me to join a hieroglyphics seminar. I realized the power of the story the hieroglyphs told. I wanted to write that story about a woman of determination set in a timescape as alien to us today as any science fiction setting,” Kohonoski says.
Research for the book took the author from modern libraries to Classic Maya sites in the rainforests of Tabasco and Chiapas, including a camping expedition into the remote jungle-laden ruins of Yaxchilan.
“Blood and Jade: A Saga of the Maya” was featured at the biggest book events in North America, BookExpo America and BookCon 2018 on May 31-Jun 3, 2018 at The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
