The indoor environmental quality of a hospital or any type of healthcare environment that has patients that may have existing respiratory issues or a weakened or suppressed immune system is of critical importance.

Recently, the Jamaica Observer published an in-depth report about a regional hospital in Montego Bay that has reportedly suffered repeated indoor environmental quality issues for years. According to the article, the Ministry of Health has put together a chronology of sick building issues that have plagued the hospital constructed back in the 1970s.

The report lists air quality problems that date back to 2009 and address a number of employee complaints associated with rashes, flu-like symptoms and respiratory concerns. Problems that were documented over the years include everything from ventilation and plumbing issues to mold, nuisance odors, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and improperly stored chemicals.

“The indoor environmental quality of a hospital or any type of healthcare environment that has patients that may have existing respiratory issues or a weakened or suppressed immune system is of critical importance,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “These patients can be much more vulnerable to exposure to chemical irritants, allergens, asthma triggers and pathogenic fungi or bacteria. Air quality and a clean indoor environment with effective surface cleaning and disinfection procedures are essential for preventing and minimizing healthcare-associated infections and other health issues.”
