Historical Novel Depicts Mid-1800 Royal Court of Thailand
A fictional tale that shows the lifestyle and values practiced by the Chakri Dynasty
Back in 1993, Asjarin Leonowens created a novel that imparts the history and culture of her hometown, Thailand. In “The Chakri Dynasty: The Legend of the Mother Earth of Siam”—an intriguing historical fiction that will bring readers back in time of “The King and I” —readers will meet the princes…of(or sired by) King Mongkut and the rich culture and society of Siam.
“The Chakri Dynasty” happened during the reign of King Rama V of Siam (modern-day Thailand) where a young girl, Pun, was presented to him. The king thought Pun was too young to be his daughter, so he gave her to his half brother, Prince Chaiya, as a babysitter. As months passed, Prince Chaiya felt a growing fondness toward Pun that grew into romantic love. Through an unfortunate incident, Pun met Prince Damrong, and the prince fell in love with the beautiful girl at first sight. Pun embarked to a journey of passion, heartache, and social hierarchy in the royal court.
Set in 1800s, the novel perfectly mirrored the culture, tradition, and the prevailing hierarchy system during the time. Asjarin mentioned informative historical accounts of the Kingdom of Siam all throughout the novel. “The story reflected the lifestyle, the values and frustration of princes in classical antiquity, slaves and jealous head wives,” Asjarin said regarding the book’s main appeal.
