Asthma Awareness Month in Puerto Rico and Identifying Environmental Asthma Triggers

In Puerto Rico and across the globe, the month of May is recognized as Asthma Awareness Month. People with asthma and organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), along with other groups dedicated to asthma control and education, join together to increase awareness about the disease.
 
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects over 24 million people nationwide, including more than 6 million children according to the CDC. It causes 3 in 5 people, living with the disease, to limit their physical activity or miss days at school and work. Asthma is also expensive, costing the United States approximately $56 billion each year.
 
“Asthma Awareness Month and educating people in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean is critically important because an asthma attack can happen anytime when someone with the condition is exposed to an asthma trigger,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “These triggers vary from one person to another, but some of the most common ones include exposure to tobacco smoke, dust mites, outdoor air pollution, chemical irritants, cockroach allergen, pets, mold, nitrogen dioxide, and smoke from burning wood or grass. Asthmatics can prevent attacks if they learn how to avoid triggers.”
