EMSL Microbiologist Contributes to the Discovery of 16 New Cladosporium Species

EMSL’s Senior Mycologist, Dr. Željko Jurjevic, along with scientists from around the world, have discovered new Cladosporium species from indoor environments. More than 500 new Cladosporium isolates from sample collected indoors were investigated from a worldwide survey of indoor mycobiota; collected mainly in China, Europe, New Zealand, North America and South Africa.

The scientists used a polyphasic approach, employing three loci, as well as morphological examinations and cultural characteristics to identify and delimitate the species’ identity. Of the 46 species identified, there have been 16 introduced as new taxa, with Cladosporium halotolerans proving to be the most frequently isolated Cladosporium species indoors.
