Allergy Advocacy Association Goes to Albany: Promote Generic Epinephrine Legislation and Kick Off a New Program, Epi Near You New York

Based in and serving Monroe County New York, Allergy Advocacy Association will be in Albany, NY on May 16^th to promote new legislation that allow pharmacists to dispense generic epinephrine and a new program to train small business owners in keeping their customers safe by keeping doses of epinephrine on site.  In addition to a booth in the Concourse of the Legislative Office Building, Association members, staff, and members of the New York State chapter of Food Allergies Research & Education (FARE) will be meeting with their local legislators to advocate for legislation in support of families with allergies.
 
Pharmacist Dispensing Generic Epinephrine (A7219a, S2489a) authorizes pharmacists to substitute an alternate epinephrine auto-injector containing the same active ingredients when:

• The prescriber does not indicate that the prescription must be dispensed as written;
• The alternate epinephrine auto-injector available would cost less, and
• The patient consents.

This important bill addresses the effect of epinephrine’s cost volatility on food allergic families.  Because these families require multiple doses of this life-saving drug in many locations (home, school, work, and grandma’s house), affordability is key to maintain  this network of epinephrine around their loved ones.
 
Epi Near You New York is an educational program developed by Allergy Advocacy Association to help Monroe County small businesses keep their customers safe by stocking epinephrine and training their staff to administer in an allergy emergency.  Businesses that serve food or other possible allergens to the public such as restaurants, summer camps, and day care centers are eligible for this training.  After receiving this NYS approved training program, businesses will receive a certificate and a non-patient-specific prescription fillable at any pharmacy in NYS. A payment voucher will be available to 501(c)(3) organizations.
 
Epi Near You New York is based on legislation the Allergy Advocacy Association helped pass, the Emergency Allergy Treatment Act, signed into law in 2016.
 
Allergy Advocacy Association has been serving families dealing with food and other allergies in Monroe County since 2010.  Through a variety of activities including presentations, participation in health fares, legislative advocacy, and newsletters, information is provided to families in all areas of research, education, and legislative support to lead happy healthy lives with well managed allergies.
