20 October 2006 - Kemira has acquired Oy Galvatek Ab, based in Lahti, southern Finland, as part of its strategy of reinforcing Kemira’s overall services focusing on wastewater treatment and the treatment, recycling, and recovery of industrial side streams. Galvatek is a company that has mainly focused on planning industrial waste water treatment plants, project management and providing of maintenance services. Its revenue during the current financial period will be approx. EUR 10 million and it has a staff of 34. Galvatek has subsidiaries in Sweden and Poland.

Galvatek’s products include surface treatment and waste water treatment plants. The company has delivered some 600 treatment plants to 30 countries. Its clientele includes several globally-operating aluminium and steel companies plus significant food-processing and energy companies.

Kemira will take over the operations related to the recovery and further refining of secondary raw material flows in industry, and the treatment of wastewater and sludge. The customers are outsourcing these functions because they are not part of their core businesses. As a result of Kemira’s total solution, the valuable metals, acids and alkalis contained in the secondary flows of industrial processes are recycled back into the customers’ processes or they are refined into commercial products. Kemira refines the iron and aluminium into the water treatment chemicals, which means conserving of virgin raw materials. The environmental friendliness of these functions is further promoted by the fact that the burden on landfills is significantly diminished. In the best-case scenario, some of the industrial landfills may even be closed.

The number of operation contracts concluded by Kemira is increasing and at the same time Kemira’s total solution concept is becoming more and more international. Some examples of our existing customers: Outokumpu Stainless Oy, Nordic Aluminium Oyj, and the German aluminium profile manufacturer NordAlu Wernal GmbH.

“The business idea of Kemira’s Industrial and Environmental Services Unit is to offer industries and municipalities total solutions, which include water and environmental research, process development, design and deliveries of novel treatment plants and chemicals, and the operation of the treatment plants,” says Vice President Hannu Luhtala, Kemira Kemwater.
