Cheryl Trzasko Publishes Book About Her Family’s Adventure at Sea

The homeschool mom from Florida shares her youthful voyage at sea in a must-read memoir for parents and children alike.

What is it like to go on a sea voyage with the whole family on a sailboat? Cheryl Trzasko shares her experiences in her memoir titled “Around the World in a Cement Boat: A Young Girl’s True Adventure” (iUniverse, 2013). This book will soon be displayed in the inaugural New York Rights Fair on May 30 to June 1, 2018.

The author was a second grader when her family began their voyage at sea in 1971. As a child, Trzasko thought nothing odd about her childhood adventures, facing a cyclone at sea, avoiding pirates, exploring a deserted island, and more. As an adult she shares her cherished memories in her first book.

Her  father Wallace Callen constructed a cement sailboat in his spare time, much to the curiosity of the townspeople who thought cement boats would sink. He bought boatbuilding plans from a British designer who developed a concept of sturdy cement boats. Though without prior experience in boatbuilding, Callen had what it takes to handle a building project.

“He trained as a surveyor in the United States Air Force,” said the author about her father. “He grew up around tools. He rebuilt cars as a teenager and fixed lots of things around the house. He could read plans and follow directions. As long as he had a decent set of plans, it couldn’t be that hard to build an ocean-going vessel; could it?”

Without the help of his friends from the building and construction industry, the 39-foot ferro-cement ketch was built. The bold and daring Callen took his entire family, including a newborn, and set out on a voyage, planning to sail from Australia past Indonesia towards Indochina, down around Africa, and over to America, where they would visit relatives for a few months before heading down to the Panama Canal on their way back to Australia.
