David Leonard Gives a Drummer’s Role a Different Twist in Historical Fiction Book

David Leonard fuses history and human drama in his enthralling book “Death’s Drummer.”  His narrative traces the life of a gifted orphan boy who, with his uncle, goes into the Civil War as a drummer.  He emerges from war a full-fledged soldier and heads alone into the Territories of the great American West.

After homesteading in Nebraska Territory and experiencing tragedy and violence, he forms a special bond with a Geologist who has saved his life.

He encounters lawlessness and much violence in his travels, but he also learns the mysteries of geology from his friend and mentor.  However, he continues to wrestle with death in all its final forms.  In their travels through the Territories of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho the protagonist finds many good people and emerges a man who sees the riches to be found in his human companions.

About the Author
Mr. Leonard was raised on the Great Divide on a remote Colorado ranch in the 1940’s and 50’s. His father died leaving ten children. His mother–with the children’s help–farmed the land, took care of the livestock and survived the terrible winters. Finally, she sold the ranch and took the children to Oregon where most graduated from college.
